Actually, I favour a single handed weapon, no shield or off hand (I've got a thing for Chinese swordsmanship a la Jet Lee). Since that option wasn't available, I went for weapon and shield, 'cause I'm a big fan of surviving.

most of my fighter-types are sword shield. A few two handed weapons.

i would say the majority of my fighter types are bastard sword (with exotic weapon prof. to use in one hand) and a shield.

good question.

Actually, Gato, wouldnt you be using an atomic bazooka, a pair of beam sabers, and an oversized fire resistance shield?:D

My wizard uses a longsword, an empty hand, and style.

He shifts to two hands when aggravated or on every third stroke.

PErsonally, my character sticks to the quarterstaff.

In my game, after years of two weapon and two-hander styles predominating, the majority of PC combatents seem to have adopted the sword-n-board style as their preference. For the first time ever, they're keeping the magical shields instead of selling them :D

Lets see, currently we have a;

Bastard-sword/shield bashing Fighter.

A Glaive wielding Barbarian

A primarily archer type that uses a one handed weapon if forced into melee.

A TWF Ranger/Rogue type.

I'm having a lot of success in an e-mail game with a chain shirt wearing, longsword and buckler combo elven fighter.

The buckler provides some additional flexibility in being able to shift to different weapons (undead bane club, longbow), swing the longsword 2-handed when I really need to do those extra few points of damage, or grab a potion in the middle of melee.

In the current crop of campaigns, we have no straight fighters. We do have:

Two rapier-and-buckler (ftr/rog), although one will probably alternate between that and dual-wielding when 3.5 comes out, depending on the requirements for duelist)

One 2-handed bastard sword (ftr/wiz)

One dual-weilding scimitar & shortsword (ftr/rng)

One bastard sword & shield (paladin)

One longsword & shield (paladin)

Plus a mace & shield (cleric) and an unarmed (monk).

Current campaign:

Bastard sword (2H) or whip (Ftr)
Mace & Shield (Ftr/Cleric)
Shortsword/dagger (ranger/rogue)
Rapier (ftr/rogue)
Bow (bard)
Unarmed (monk/sor)
Magic Missile (sor)
