I've never seen anything like that happen. And while I'm quite sure there are plenty of bad cops out there, I've never met one yet. Some of the logical leaps you're making from pretty extreme (and extremely rare) examples to the belief that we're all slaves of society are completely unsupported. For those kinds of things, I don't think you'll find that Denmark, or anywhere else for that matter, is really any better.

Also, no offense, but you're plan of moving to Denmark and living off of savings and investments, of which you say you have none at the moment, seems like pretty wishful thinking to me.

read my first post in this thread. That's the first thing I said.

First, my rant above is not a discussion about why I’ve selected Denmark. It is a discussion of only a few of the reasons I want to leave the US. My main reasons for picking Denmark have not been mentioned yet by me, though some other people have guessed at them.

Also, it isn’t really wishful thinking any more. It is a plan. Recently, I’ve adjusted my lifestyle to a much lower cost of living. Next, I’ll be getting as better job (hence my rants about the hiring process). By this time next year I should be making about $40,000/year and putting most of that into savings.

I figure it’ll take me 5-7 years to pull this off.

“that’s too long” you say? “you’ll never do it.” you say?

Well, all I can say is, it’s all about being focused. I’ve been told “you can’t do that” my whole life and I’ve consistently proven people wrong about the things I can do. Again it is all about single-minded determination.

Furthermore I didn’t say I plan to survive off of savings and investments alone. I also plan to continue to run my publishing company. Which, by the way is already moving away from game publishing. I plan to write my last d20 book in the next few years. After that I’ll be writing short stories and nonfiction only.

I've never seen anything like that happen. And while I'm quite sure there are plenty of bad cops out there, I've never met one yet.

So because you’ve never had a bad experience with a cop means my views are extreme and unrealistic?

Some of the logical leaps you're making from pretty extreme (and extremely rare) examples to the belief that we're all slaves of society are completely unsupported.

That’s what people always say. “Oh it’s a rare case.” But if it is so rare, why do I hear people telling me that every time someone’s rights are violated? If it were truly rare, I wouldn’t hear that all the time.

Also, I didn’t say slaves of “society” I said slaves of capitalism. Think about it the next time you are working 51 weeks a year, 10 hours a day, 6 days a week, like my father does. Like my sister does. Like I do.

Again, Americans work more hours than anyone else on earth, including the Chinese. If you like that, keep doing it. I, on the other hand, want more out of life than that.

I’ll now be contacting the mods to close this thread as it has achieved its goal of helping me learn more about life in Europe and decide on a prospective country to visit and perhaps move to. At this point it can only devolve into a socio-political fire-fight, which I will not be able to abstain from.

EDIT: Errr.... ok. So its not easy to send the mods an E-mail. I keep getting "This function has been disabled by the administrator."

Will the next mod to read this thread please close it before I say something regretful.

Thanks!

And thanks also to the friendly Europeans who have helped me in this discussion. :)

Why do you hear it all the time? Primarily because people are rarely entirely honest.

I have been very close with folks on both sides of the law. Almost without exception the folks complaining about the "facist" police invariably leave out the little details about WHY they came into conflict with the police. It's funny how things appear when you are only hearing one side of the story.

You've obviously made up your mind on the subject, but please don't ever confuse your subjective views with objective reality.

Your statement that...
"I recently spotted a gang of local cops in a restaurant and I was struck by how much they looked like Gestapo agents--- jackboots and all.

...says it all. You've reached the point where you project your prejudice upon others without any factual basis.

Feel free to move wherever you wish, I have absolutely no problems with that. Just keep in mind a couple of things.

1. The cost of living in Western Europe is typically 20-30% higher than the average in the US, regardless of country. You will have less buying power, period.

2. If you remain a US citizen the first 100K or so is Tax free.

3. Europe has police officers as well. If you think they are going to give you free ice cream & a reach around then you're fooling yourself.

4. Any rant about "rights" with no mention of "responsibility" is meaningless.

What?

I made about $35,000 last year, paid taxes on every paycheck and still had to pay an additional $250 in April.

I think you are the one struggling with reality.

that's fine. As long as they don't operatate under the false pretence of "the land of the Free" Claiming one thing while doing something else I'll be happy.

am I prejudice against police officers?

Yes I am.

Police officer is in the top two of most common professions among domestic abusers. When they are not beating up innocent people on the street, they are beating up their families at home.

The cost of living in Western Europe is typically 20-30% higher than the average in the US, regardless of country. You will have less buying power, period.

already addressed over the past several pages. I'll deal with it. Furthermore, the Europeans would disagree with you and one has posted a statement that completely refutes that claim already.

I have been very close with folks on both sides of the law.

Did you get any reach arounds?

Yeah. Right now, the only way to contact a moderator is PMing or e-mail them directly. My e-mail address is oni_no_bakaATyahooDOTcom

Sure, it's heading in problematic territory anyway.
