Which Modules to run?

First Post
Hi there,

right now i am beginning to set up a game for a couple of people i know. The problem is that i have very little free time, so i decided to go using bought modules.

What i am asking for is: Can anyone give me ideas, how i can span the range for the chars to go from lvl1 to lvl16+ ?!

I mean i like RttToeE and dark academy sound good, so i will buy them for sure, but apartfrom them? Freeport?

any input will be welcome..

Dougal DeKree, retired gnomish illusionist

P.S.: and yes, i WILL include orc&pie at some point...maybe make it an epic quest, who knows? ;)

For my group, I did the Freeport trilogy to get them from 1-6, and am just starting The Banewarrens which will bring them from 6-10. After that, I'm thinking of doing Hell in Freeport, which is for levels 10-12, so they should all line up just about perfectly.

Well, its for 13th level characters, but I'm about to run Monte Cook's The Demon God's Fane for one of my groups. I highly recommend it. Its only a $5 PDF download. PDF adventures are nice because you can write on them, print out extra pages, whatever.

Lost Tomb of Kruk Ma Kali is a good one, it is 8-12 level I think. It is in the vain of Tomb of Horrors, but has more build up and is not a huge Dungeon Crawl. RttToEE is nice and long, but the Crater RIdge Mine section can get really bogged down.

The Sunless Citadel, Forge of Fury etc, line from WotC is rock solid. I think it goes from 1st-20th levels, though, obviously, some of the modules will be better than others. We played the first two before our DM had a kid and passed the DM duties on to me. ;-)

Now we are playing Freeport. Freeport is also pretty cool; but its a lot more work for the DM for a couple reasons. 1) Its shorter. I threw in some padding encounters in a homemade setup and still only 2 of 6 characters managed to level up to 2nd. So, I'll have to brew up some more padding before the second adventure. Depending on the power level of your characters, you might have to brew up a lot; the second module is pitched at levels 2-5. 2) Its much more open ended. Thats cool if you have an experienced party who says "been there, done that" to dungeon crawls and a DM who is experienced enough to keep everything flowing smoothly. Sunless Citadel is unabashedly a dungeon crawl with a little bit of RP available; Freeport is a big bunch of RP with a very little bit of dungeon crawl. The first type of adventure is much easier to DM.

Hope this helps.

Tomb of Abysthor from Necromancer Games is a good one for levels 3 to 8. It is essentially a 9 level dungeon (plus countryside) with lots of things to do, evocative places and multiple power groups you can fight or ally with. And... Giant frogs!

I ran Sunless Citadel, and didn't like it much, so I won't recommend the WotC modules. Instead, why not download Wizard's Amulet from Necromancer, then purchase Crucible of Freya and a few others I've used their modules, and they're quite good. Each one has free stuff, like player maps and additional encounters that you can download from their website. And if the Bard's Gate city setting ever comes out, you'll be all set.

Campaign

I have prepared myself to for a long campaign and because i dont have that much time , i wanted premaded quests. I have one big storyline written to link them all together and made some alterations.

Lvl 1-4 Very good written and free quests you can find them on planewalker.com.

5-6 I use some adventures from the dungeon magazine, dont know which ones yet.

6-10 Banewarrens because its just good and i like Monte Cook

10-18 City of the spider queen, read it and love it.

18- Bastion of broken souls

The characters are only lvl 2 but are having a lot of fun with the agf modules from planewalker, they're just good and what you dont like you can alter.

Try these...

I heartily recommend Spawn of Shurpanakha, Froderick's Tomb, and Voyage to Storm Isle by FFG. I think they're all out of print, though.

Sometime this month, you should be able to pick up The Office and Affairs of Love, a PDF module put out by Anubium.

I also hear the author is a really nice guy. :)
