I've seen it performed as a one-person stage play.
that sounds awesome. I had a similar experience with The Tell-Tale Heart and the Monkey's Paw when I was kid (our school went to, I think the Boston Opera House---can't recall exactly---and saw performances of them). I think that really did a lot to spur my interest in this kind of stuff. Something about seeing the Tell-Tale Heart performed readied my mind to read the story

Rilly? Acismray aside, he didn't want to write that story and it shows.

(On the other hand, it brought us one of the funnier numbers in A Shoggoth on the Roof.)
IMO Lovecraft is not a very good writer, particularly when he is intentionally aping 19th century literary style. But HWR is a much more contemporary style and significantly more approachable.

Also, it gave us one of the greatest B horror movies of all time.
