Which of these six is the best H.P. Lovecraft story?

I think it is great. With Lovecraft sometimes I am not there for a story. I am there for an experience. Some of his stories have bored me, but this wasn’t one of them.

I've seen it performed as a one-person stage play.

that sounds awesome. I had a similar experience with The Tell-Tale Heart and the Monkey's Paw when I was kid (our school went to, I think the Boston Opera House---can't recall exactly---and saw performances of them). I think that really did a lot to spur my interest in this kind of stuff. Something about seeing the Tell-Tale Heart performed readied my mind to read the story

IMO Lovecraft is not a very good writer, particularly when he is intentionally aping 19th century literary style. But HWR is a much more contemporary style and significantly more approachable.

Also, it gave us one of the greatest B horror movies of all time.
