Legend
I've seen it performed as a one-person stage play.I think it is great. With Lovecraft sometimes I am not there for a story. I am there for an experience. Some of his stories have bored me, but this wasn’t one of them.

that sounds awesome. I had a similar experience with The Tell-Tale Heart and the Monkey's Paw when I was kid (our school went to, I think the Boston Opera House---can't recall exactly---and saw performances of them). I think that really did a lot to spur my interest in this kind of stuff. Something about seeing the Tell-Tale Heart performed readied my mind to read the storyI've seen it performed as a one-person stage play.
Rilly? Acismray aside, he didn't want to write that story and it shows. The best written HPL story, IMO, is Herbert West, Reanimator
IMO Lovecraft is not a very good writer, particularly when he is intentionally aping 19th century literary style. But HWR is a much more contemporary style and significantly more approachable.Rilly? Acismray aside, he didn't want to write that story and it shows.
(On the other hand, it brought us one of the funnier numbers in A Shoggoth on the Roof.)
