Rust monster. Then just go adventure in the underdark where everything drops +3 items that you can't leave the underdark with until you find something that you CAN leave the underdark with.

You young whippersnappers! In my day, we didn't need equipment, or "kewl powerz" to have fun. Heck, we had entire adventrue modules designed to be played by characters dressed only in a loin cloth, with no equipment and no spells! Heh.

Seriously, what 1st edition game are you playing where you didn't replace all of your equipment over the course of every 3-4 levels of play?

First edition characters were made of steel; their gear was made of kleenex.

The easy answer here is 'Rust Monster'.

Chances are, your items aren't particularly unique anyway. If they are unique, chances are your DM just hands stuff like that out anyway and you'll have something better in a couple of levels. In the mean time, you pull out the backup +1 sword and +3 splint mail that no one was using and you are on your way. You'll likely trip over a +3 morningstar in a couple of rooms, and who knows, maybe some orc chieftain is using a magic shield for table service next door.
 


I voted "Rust Monster," but in actuality, none of them bother me that much. Don't get me wrong- I love all my PCs- but I'm fine with anything that happens to them as long as it pushes the story forward.

And besides, it really depends upon the campaign.

In some games, Res spells and Level restorers have been more common than gear.

In addition, as someone else stated, PC death may give you the option of playing something else. To me, that's a real benefit: I have hundreds of PC concepts scribbled here or there and even on my PDA, all waiting to be played...
 


I've gone for level drain for multiple reasons. First, there are plenty of things that protect against and reverse level drain. Secondly, while it is was hard to get the level, it's not as hard to get back the level. You're equipment will be up at the same standard as before*, and you'll be adventuring with the same level party as before unless you're all drained. With the way XP progression worked in 2e, you might even be back to your old level before the rest of party get their next one. Thirdly, at higher levels, individual levels don't matter that much. Put a 15th level fighter up against a 20th level fighter and the odds are still almost even.

(* IMC we once had a 5th level magic-user wandering around with a staff of power. Which he'd earned.)
 


Really? A citation would be helpful, because I have no such memory (although I'm not very familiar with 2e peculiarities).

I don't have a 2E DMG at the moment - the last time I played 2E was ten years ago - but I remember it stating that PCs should not be able to buy magic items in a store. Can anybody with a copy provide a page number?
 

I can't believe anyone would choose anything other than rust monster. It's like asking whether you'd choose to lose your Lexus, die, or get amnesia. I can always get another car, even if it's a 1972 Ford Pinto.
