Which Psionics rules do you use?

Dude, I was only kidding! It's just that when I choose the word "gay" to describe the rules for the Psionics Handbook, it's because that's honestly the way I feel about them. Am I being derogatory? Perhaps! But my INTENT is to be derogatory regarding the rules and nothing else. I could have easily utilized any other sort of adjective on the open market.

Now, here in America, the word 'gay' (in the context that I used it) can easily be interchanged with the words 'dumb', 'stupid', 'geeky', 'retarded', 'lame', 'silly', etc. But if I called them dumb, would mute persons in the world suddenly feel offended?

I mean, I could have used 'inefficient', 'undesireable', 'awkward', etc., but I think 'gay' really was, at the time, my best choice.

Just be thankful I didn't say "Gee, the rules for the Psionics Handbook are really too homosexual for me!"

LoL

Or how about "Ugh! These rules have herpes! I want no part of them!"

Alternately, "How the hell am I supposed to play with these damned, cancerous rules?"

I suppose I could have tailored my comments to be completely scientific and politically correct, but it would have been a false representation of myself as a human being.

Psionic combat will occur only if a player wants to memorize either the Mindscapes psi combat system or any other system that seems fair.

will the rules for the "expanded" Psionics Handbook also be "revised"?

Yes. If you get a chance, check out the previews in Dragon. The latest one shows that at least psionic feats and skills have been revised. My bet is that there'll be plenty of others too. I was hoping that they'd be completely revising the psionic combat system but I'm not so hopeful now that I see that Malhavoc has a new psionic product on the schedule for later this year that's suppose to include updates of all of Bruce's previous fixes to 3.5.

And to answer the original question, I use the power scaling rule and revised psion chart in Mindscapes and IFTCK. Theoretically, we use a homebrewed system for psionic combat, but in practice, there's never been a psionic combat since we adopted it.

Sorry about the double post. It's either my 'arthritic' connection or the server for this site has Parkinson's. Sorry again about those last two comments, but I'm sorta evil!

intelligent rocks? jiminy. i never liked that part of the psychic classes.
It's too "shirley mclane" for me and i'm a closet new ager at heart.
hmmm instead of having them intelligent, just make the foci or a repository for extra power points that they can draw on at will.

Oh man, thats both so funny and so offensive I just dont know what to do. Props to you for confusing me.

I just read a review of the Psionics Handbook on amazon.com and, after this one guy thrashed it about, he highly recommended the psionics system found in the "Forbidden Kingdoms" book by Otherworld. Does anyone here agree with him?

By the way, when the new Psionics books come out, haggle with your dealer rather than paying full price. I'm sur you can Jew him down.

(Somebody actually used that phrase during a negotiation in a game of mine. But not twice.)

I'm sorry, when you crticize the rules by saying they're "gay," you're not just being derogatory about the rules; you're being derogatory about gays. I'm afraid the the etymological connection between the two uses of the word "gay" is just too recent and too direct for it not to be nasty. It's not like it started getting used in high schools by accident, because it was an acronym for "Gunky And Yucky" or something, and then someone said, "isn't that weird? It's the same word we use for homosexuals!" No, people started using "gay" to mean "not very good" simply because they thought gays weren't very good. And they just started doing it a few years ago. Stop helping them out.

To answer your question: I don't use any rules for Psionics. They don't exist IMC, because they don't fit the flavor.

huh, I didn't see the humor, so I had an easier time of it, I guess... Using an offensive term without thinking is one thing, insulting the people who point it out and defending the offensiveness with increaingly stretched and immature clownishness is another.

I understand most people have unexamined sections of their vocabularies, I've been 'guilty' of it myself. But the way a person behaves when they find out their behavior was offensive even if it was unintentional tells me a lot about their maturity level and how much time I should be spending on them in the future. And "making a big joke out of it while defending yourself as right" isn't an option high on my list.

On the subject of psionics, I'm going to have to either check out third party systems or make one up myself if I want to use psionics... the "powers" system is just too much magic by another name for me... I'd like to see something skill based, with a seperation of power and finesse being significant.

What are the R&R II psionic rules anyway?
