They are both great books, and if you can't swing getting them both now, I'd just recommend you go with what would be more immediately useful.

If you would most likely not "use" either in the short term, I'd go with Mutants & Masterminds, as it is a great read.

Races Of Faerun. As is usual with the FR books, it is very high quality, and it is easy to take the crunch within and modify it to use in almost any other setting.

If you're going to play M&M, you need that book. You can play D&D w/o RoF.

I say go with M&M, the game is very simple (much less complicated than D&D), and it's tons of fun. If you're going to be playing in FR a lot, than go w/ RoF -- it's a pretty good book too.

I vote for Races of Faerun. So far its caused me the kind of referencing, character development thoughts, and creative outbursts not seen since Magic of Faerun (damn I wish that had been hardcover).

Although, I've never played/seen the rules for M+M.

Races of Faerun and Mutants and Masterminds are both great books. I voted MM, because you can play 3e without RoF, but you can't play MM w/o MM.

If you're making a list of "things I will eventually buy", I'd put them both on the list.

Well M&M is an entirely new game of superheroes, while Races is a book that I'd probably use only occasionally. If you're a big comics fan, I'd say the former.

I guess it depends on how creative you are. If you want pre-planned stuff that's fairly tightly defined (such as prestige classes, race packages etc.) ROF would be for you. But if you want something that can do just about anything (I'm sure you could build a dwarf with a hippogriff if you spent five minutes on it), MnM is great. Pity about the lack of perfect correspondance to D&D, but there are ways to get around that.

(I haven't actually seen ROF, but I believe I know its type. MnM, however, I do have and like immensely.)
