Whirlwind Attack and 3 dimensional combat

Okie, I asked this (along with some plot brooding ideas) on general and didn't get much of an answer to it specifically, so I thought to ask here :).

Semi-apologies for the multipost.

Anycase, I have a coming situation that more or less sums up to an advanced Kraken having Whirlwind Attack (Improved Whirlwind Attack from ELH technically, but it behaves the same as the 3.5 regular whirlwind attack). The combat situation will be underwater, so 3 dimensional combat is quite likely and possible. I'm left pondering if Whirlwind attack should be a Sphere shape or a disc shape.

From my reading, it looks/seems like it should be a Sphere shape, and just wanted confirmation (or simple a statement that this needs to goto House Rules :P).

Krakens with 3E Whirlwind Attack are funny, though.

They can tentacle you from a hundred feet away... or they can hit everyone within... five feet.

Am I confused about what these things do or were you just stressing the emphasis for a joke?

WHIRLWIND ATTACK [GENERAL]
Prerequisites: Dex 13, Int 13, Combat Expertise, Dodge, Mobility, Spring Attack, base attack bonus +4.
Benefit: When you use the full attack action, you can give up your regular attacks and instead make one melee attack at your full base attack bonus against each opponent within reach.

Kraken
Space/Reach: 20 ft./15 ft. (60 ft. with tentacle, 30 ft. with arm)

Everything you just quoted is accurate...

... in 3.5.

As Reiella alluded to, to hit everything you can reach in 3E, you need the Epic Feat Improved Whirlwind Attack. But at least in 3E you can Great Cleave off anyone you drop in your Whirlwind... can't do that in 3.5.

Of course, said Kraken uses Great Cleave too...

But I'm not that evil (the 'Bucket of Slugs' / 'Ocean of Fish' cheese), unless my players start doing that. ;)

My situation is 3e, but for the most part, the rules used in 3.5 apply equally as well. I was just being redundant in case my assumption was incorrect :).

Thats odd.. I had realized that before I posted and closed the window..

but enworld decided to post it anyway? that is.. odd..

It's all about linear velocity, not angular velocity, old chap.

Couldn't you Great Cleave if you drop the last one in the Whirlwind? Just select your target order carefully... :)
