Whirlwind Attack

Now I'm looking at Whirlwind Attack, and it notes that you make one full base attack bonus against each opponent within reach. How have you handled this? In the past, I just went with one attack roll with full bonus applied to it and that roll determined who you hit and one damage roll. Some other people do it the other way where you roll hit and damage per opponent.

WHIRLWIND ATTACK [GENERAL]

Prerequisites: Dex 13, Int 13, Combat Expertise, Dodge, Mobility, Spring Attack, base attack bonus +4.

Benefit: When you use the full attack action, you can give up your regular attacks and instead make one melee attack at your full base attack bonus against each opponent within reach.

When you use the Whirlwind Attack feat, you also forfeit any bonus or extra attacks granted by other feats, spells, or abilities.

Special: A fighter may select Whirlwind Attack as one of his fighter bonus feats.

I use it as making a seperate attack roll for each potential target.

Also, to get maximum use out of this ability now you simply 'must' have reach.

This also avoids the 'whirlwind of missing everyone at once!' and 'crit every creature out there!', both of which I feel are unreasonable ;)

I've always read that as one attack per opponent. Much less "all or nothing" that way.

This says keep on rolling to me. It would say "make one melee attack at your full base attack bonus and apply it against each opponent within reach" to be interpreted the other way.

But, as long as you are consistent, I wouldn't make a fuss about playing either way.

OTOH, a ranger surrounded by 4 orcs and 4 giant rats who has +2 attack and damage against orcs might be a case for rolling each strike and damage roll.

Separate rolls for each opponent.

If I say "I'm going to give one apple to each goblin", it's very different to "I'm going to give one apple to all the goblins"...
