Weren't the thouls typo monsters? The story I heard was a pair of ghouls were written as a a pair of thouls, and the DM (possibly Arneson) made up the new creature on the spot.

I think they're great monsters, just about dangerous enough at their HD to keep players on their toes without being too powerful.

It does appear in the Blackmoor CS, but they are not OGC (from what I can tell, only the magic section of that book is designated as such).
