I'm guessing that Dungeon #127 may be responsible for this thread?

(All three adventures in the issue feature doppelgangers.)

I haven't seen Dungon #127 yet, so that's not it.

Of the six stereotypical scenarios listed, I'd played in or ran five of them repeatedly. I'd never played or run a doppelganger murder mystery though.

I've had characters encounter dopplegangers before. I've run encounters with dopplegangers before, even though I'm more partial to rakshasas. Haven't played in the murder mystery yet though. I just had to wonder how similar other's experiences have been.

Hence the poll to see how many people have played or ran the doppelmurder mystery.

I've played in far too many Doppleganger murder scenerios. They are now banned from use in my campaigns.

I abused it so much when I was younger my players developed a "doppleganger codeword". You had to say the password from time-to-time or the character would be slain on the spot. One of my favorite campaign moments from the early eighties was when a player genuinely could not remember the codeword and his character was slain. Pure pandemonium.

BTW - I shared that story with Jolly Blackburn and it landed square in KODT issue #18 I believe. The first appearance of the Black Hand group. It also made an appearance in the Jolly Roger game called Orcs or some such thing as one of the cards in the game.

Hmm, I had figured someone would have mentioned Piratecat's doppleganger adventures for the Defenders of Daylight in the first post or two.

I played in one that was just a one-session subplot for the main campaign. It killed one of the PCs before my half-orc fighter (with a feat that allowed a bite attack!) tore his throat out and devoured him. Now his indigestion comes and goes, but is often mistaken for gas.

Technically it was a "Changeling" murder (Eberron) on a train (Lightningrail), at least I think it was, we arrived at our destination before the murder was solved.

Avoid stereotypical material. We’re looking for new ideas or fresh approaches to old ideas. Even the most tired cliché can work with a clever twist. Here are some stereotypical adventure ideas; think twice about using them unless you have a particularly good twist in mind.
Rescue someone’s kidnapped daughter
Solve a murder perpetrated by a doppelganger.
Retrieve an ancient artifact.
Battle a deranged wizard or sorcerer.
Repel a simple humanoid infestation.
Defeat an undead army.
The above list is not all-inclusive.

currently have all of these in the OD&D campaign i'm refereeing.

I think it's funny that doppelgangers have an alignment of neutral, yet 9 times out of 10 they have murdered someone and taken their place. If my character does that, it's EEEEEEVIL, but I guess it's not that bad for a doppelganger.
