Our group goes by consensus. This works well for us mainly because my group has been gaming together for over 6 years.

"6 years? 6 years you say, my you're barely out of training. I've been slaying orc, ogres and giants for more than thrice that time son. Yah can't win battles fighting by consensus lad, no in combat you need to be decisive a wrong decision is better than no decision at all or just standing round gabbing about it! You stick by me and follow my lead, we'll have you cleaving orc skulls in no time."

At least that's what Dunbar Irontwister my dwarven fighter would say, not got very high charisma (actually its 6) but doesn't mean he can't take the lead. An unpopular lead, with the workers grumbling and considering stabbing him in his sleep lead.

Knowing I'm a very vocal person (and hating to have to hold my tongue during play) I never play characters with a really low charisma.

Currently, my mage (with a 13 cha) is the party's de facto battle leader. This is in part because I know the game mechanics best, and in part because my mage has a 20 Int. You don't argue with the genius. :D

Everybody knows the paladin takes charge. I'm surprised that the paladin wasn't an option. Oh well, I'll vote on some other poll then...

Yeah, if there's a Paladin, he'll lead. Otherwise the Fighter - especially a Lawful/Good Fighter.

Neither an option so I couldn't vote. :(

I guess it's slightly sad really, but the leader tends to be based on a player basis rather than a character basis.

The most experienced player, he who knows the rules etc. tends to become the dominant character, if not the quasi-official leader. Charisma and the mental stats/skills of the character tend not to matter much (although the player tends to have high Cha characters).

Having said that, he tends to be a wizard and/or wizards tend to dominate/come second place, so that's how I voted.

Perhaps it's a comment on my abilities as a DM, but in the campaign I run. It's certain players who always call all the shots for the party not certain character types.

The same here. You have no OTHER option!

Yea, this group has gone 6 years with out changing it's membership. That was until recently, we added a daughter of one of the players.

As far as trainging I and my wife have been gaming 20+ years each young dwarf. :-)

Who's in charge? The player who takes initiative of course! In our group, a dungeon crawl can in worst cases look something like this.

Wizard: Which way?
Fighter: Any.
Wizard: Any other suggestions?
Cleric: I dunno, where do you want to go?
Wizard: I don't care. Where do you guys want to go?
Rogue: Make up your mind already!
Fighter: Look, does it matter which way we go?
Cleric: So, which way do we go then?!
Monk: *Wanders down left passage*
Everyone: *Follows monk*

We tend to go by consensus usually. We do suffer same Barbarian rushing off phenomena... or the Cleric/Paladins getting into Crusading frenzy versus evil that dictates group "direction". We have had more than a fair share of Better than thou Paladins ordering people around. Short life span of Paladins has stopped this from becoming to much of a hassle  They can be such hardasses.

Thou my Barbarian only usually follows along. He will complain about bad choices thou. In the evil group I play I do tend to push others around to do my will... but I think my superior INT and being the only Lawful aligned guy dictates that.

In my older groups thou we have the same players basically "leading" decision making... and the Lawful Absents going along.
