Is there a difference between a Live Journal and a Blog?

Other than the providers?

Livejournal, like OpenDiary before it, has become a lot more than a set of blogs - it becomes a community of friends who read each other's blogs and comment and hold conversations, much like these forums. I have several friends who I only see twice a year, but we keep up on each other's lives through livejournal, and interact there. In addition, livejournal allows you to set up 'communities' which is a blog where multiple people can make blog entries instead of just the owner.

I don't know how Blogspot works, but it works like this for LiveJournal:

You can designate other LiveJournal members as "Friends". This allows them to read certain posts that you have designated as "Friends Only". There is also a function in your LiveJournal that allows you to see all the recent posts made by your Friends - you don't have to check their LiveJournal individually. Posts made in the LiveJournal Communities (=forums) you have subscribed to can also be made to appear in this way. This is quite convenient - you can see at a glance who written what without looking at multiple websites.

It's pretty good, and it's free. What more could I ask for?

Like blogspot, yes. But not like typical blogs.

Most typical blogs are not all interconnected unless hosted on a major blog host like blogspot or livejournal.

I use Word Press, installed on my site. Movable Type and other blogging apps can also be installed on the same server that hosts your regular website. In addition, WP also allows multiple users. Another blog I post to is Kathy Kinsley's On the Third Hand. Movable Type also allows multiple authors, if you buy a multiple author version.

The you have Free Conversant and Blog City, both community blog hosts.
