who likes anime

This is an absolutely silly anime, which is part of the fun. And yes, they don't hunt them to kill them, but it's almost as bad.:)

For sheer silly, it's hard to beat Excel Saga.

Beating Excel Saga is difficult but a few series match it in silliness or weirdness.

Puni Puni Poemy is in the same vein as Excel (by the same director and using some of the same characters). It's even more hyper and demented. It even breaks the 4th wall more than Excel Saga (e.g. at one point, you see the camera crew filming the characters). Only one DVD though.

Furi Kuri (Fooly Cooly) is as weird, if not weirder, than Excel Saga, but Excel is funnier.

Ebichu the Housekeeping Hamster (think Hamtaro redone by Heavy Metal magazine) is the kind of sick funny series that will probably appeal to Excel fans. Despite the cute name and cute simple art, the series is raunchy and very violent. Ebichu is unlikely to ever be translated for the North American market because it's just too weird and adult-oriented. You can find a fansub if you look online.

Ranma 1/2 is silly and funny but far less weird than Excel Saga. The manga's even funnier in my opinion. Ranma's more in line with "typical" comedy anime.

A bit? ;) I suppose Urotsukidoji has "a bit" of sexual content. ;)
(Oh dear God, why is that the first one that popped into my head?)

Ninja Scroll managed to get shown uncut on late night TV here. It's got a fair bit of blood and at least one graphic rape scene, so it's clearly in the adult-oriented end of the spectrum. By anime standards, it's a bit graphic. By North American animation standards, it's pretty graphic... sort of on par with a 1980s slasher movie I guess.

Try Ichi the Killer or something in that vein if you want really graphic. Heck, even Elfen Lied has more graphicly bloody corpses than Ninja Scroll. Bloody horrible slaughter is pretty common in darker anime, especially the horror stuff.

And then you get the violent hentai stuff like Urotsukdoji. It's got a lot of sexual content and a lot of violence, often in the same scene. I dunno if it would have been my first choice for an anime with sexual content though (too gruesome). There's plenty of hentai stuff that lacks the violent themes of that one.

If I could reccomend any fansubbed anime that hasn't been licensed though, it would have to be Monster. That is one of the very best series I have ever seen. It's simply amazing.

Monster is awesome. I haven't yet watched the anime (I'm collecting episodes until I've got the whole series before watching it) but I've read the entire manga. Very cool stuff.

YES! Ebichu! :D :D :D One of the most hillarious things I have ever seen!

And, I just discovered Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan (AKA Club-To-Death Angel Dokuro-chan). That is some hillarious stuff. Not in the same vein as Excel Saga exactly, but it has a certain quality to it. So far I've only watched episodes 1 and 2, but so funny!

Yeah, it just popped into my head. Perhaps because of all the noteriety it had in my anime club in college. F3 then.

Also, Static just released Mai-Otome 01 (always preferred their HiME sub)!

Yep, watched the first episode. I'm kinda missing the characters from Mai Hime though, both of which I'd recommend.

Oh yeah, Trinity Blood is pretty cool. I just finished watching episode eighteen a couple hours ago. Man, I keep thinking of new anime to recommend everytime I see this thread. I guess there's just SOOO much anime that there's bound to be a lot of good ones among the many, many terrible ones.

Oh yeah, Speed Grapher just finished it's last episode a couple of days ago. It's pretty cool. Did you want descriptions of animes, or just names? I've seen people recommend tons of anime, but there isn't so much information as to why they are good, or even what they're about.

Oh yeah [hehe, getting tired of me saying that yet?] Full Metal Panic is good. Full Metal Panic Fumafoo is kind of a more silly version, and Full Metal Panic The Second Raid is the second season, which is slowly being released by fansubs.

Everyone keeps telling me to watch Trinity Blood. It must be good, everyone I know likes it.

Right now the shows I'm keeping up with that are being fansubbed as they come out are:
Bleach (big swords, lots of fighting)
Blood+ (modern day vampire fighting)
Honey and Clover (shoujo romantic with some comedy, real life stuff)
Ichigo 100% (typical one guy and a herem of girls)
Mai Otome (shounen magical girl series)
Monster (suspense drama)
Naruto (over the top ninja action)
Suzuka (high school romance drama)
Tantei Gakuen Q (detective)
Tsubasa Chronicle (CLAMP reunion, chase the macguffins across dimensions)

I love 'em all. (well except Ichigo, its funny but derivative)

Ninja scroll is a classic. The series wasn't my cup of tea, but the movie was pretty good.

Ghost in the Shell is another movie that I enjoyed after watching it a few times to get al lthe nuiances.

Haven't seen part 2 yet though.

Well genre labels like "fantasy" or "sci fi" get a bit fuzzy in anime.

So here are my recomendations for anime, in general

Neon Genesis: Evangelion

Haibane-Renmei

Serial Experiments: Lain

Fullmetal Alchemist

Outlaw Star

any ./hack (.hack//Sign, .hack Legend of the Twilight)

Last Exile

Any of the Vampire Hunter D

RahXephon

Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040

Blue Seed

Thats all that comes to me at the moment. Those top three are probably my all time favorites.

Also the new one Gilgamesh is shaping up pretty good.

Ahhh! Another anime I forgot. The first movie was awesome, the second less so. GITSAC and GITS 2nd Gig, the two season of the show, are excellent too.

Amen to that!

For those who don't know, it's a sort of psycho-thriller series with elements of The Fugitive in it. Dr Temma, a Japanese doctor working in Germany, saves the life of a small boy. Then several people at the hospital wind up dead. Some years later, he's gained a prestigious position. Without saying more... more people are killed and the facts implicate him, despite his innocence. So he has to go on the run from the police, to track down the real killer.

Other series I like:

My first and foremost anime love is Lupin III (caper genre)
Scrapped Princess
Legends of the Galactic Heroes (old space opera)
Yakitate Japan! (um... comedy battle anime about breadmaking! :))
Naruto
Captain Harlock (more ancient stuff:))
Trigun
Cowboy Bebop

I'd like to see some of that French stuff (I thought it was actually French-made?) that Azul mentioned, Goldorak and Capitaine Flamme. Capitaine Flamme had a very catchy themesong. Were they French dubs of Japanese-made anime, or French or French-Japanese productions?
