Who told Morris about the E-tools patch?

Meepo, where did you get that quote from? It is one of the funniest things I have seen in a while.

Hmmmm, but doesn't a meter long Hot Dog sound good?

Come on herald be nice to the shortties. They can't help it that they were born that way. ;)

It's from the "metric system sucks" (I paraphrase) post from a few days back in General.

Since an official source wasn't listed, I think it's best to assume and treat it as a rumor, even if it's from a reliable (unofficial) source.

Yep, that's the best way to treat this sort of thing. If I don't list (or link to) a source, then you can usually assume it's because the scooper asked me not to (for whatever reason). Since I always promise to do that when asked, that means that sometimes I can't provide you with the proof you'd like, much as I'd like to - I try to keep my promises. :)

So, it's pretty much your own judgement when it comes to deciding how reliable my news is, and whether to treat such things as rumours or a fairly reliable facts.

One thing I will say, though - generally, I don't put things in the news if I don't believe them. If I am skeptical, but feel you guys would like to hear the rumour anyway, I try to make it very clear that it's just a rumour.

In this particular case, it came from a * very* reliable source (as you can see, since it turned out to be true shortly thereafter!)

Any info from this source on when they'll be releasing the patch?

Just a minor criticisim. Since this is a news site, it is generally considered standard operating procedure to identify what kind of source the material came from. If it is anonymous, they it should be said so right away.

Or at the very least, just say; "Rumor: blah , blah, blah."

Otherwise I find the news here to be superb.

Standard Operating Procedure? Bleh. Nothing to do with me. :)

I disagree. It's only SoP when something is being directly quoted (because quotes are attributed). It's extremely common in publishing to report sourceless information. The vast, vast majority of it is sourceless, in fact.

It's the role of the editor and publisher to decide whether or not their sources are reliable, and they stake their editorial reputation on their judgement. If you find that an editorial policy is unreliable then you stop relying on that publication.

So far I have found ENWorld's editorial judgement to be extremely reliable. When something is shaky or potentially unreliable then it is marked as such. That's the appropriate SoP, IMO, YMMV, etc.

Let me go on to say that my pervious statement is "My humble opinion" and should only be taken as such.

Should this idea not be used, I will still beat a hasty step here every morning to get my fix. As I said before I find the news here superb.

I don't agree that most news is sourceless. (again, IMHO) But I do agree that a lot of news comes from a source that can't be quoted.

Some news agencies find news out themselves becuase they witness it themselves. The then are indeed the source. Since it is unlikely that Morris was there when the exchange happened (living in another country will do that for you), I think it is safe to assume he was told by someone. So the question in my mind was who told him? And when I say who, I mean was it an offical source or unoffical, and honestly thats all a wanted to know. Offical or unoffical.

But, what I want and what I can expect to get can be two differant things. Morris does a great job, and given the amount of work he has had to go through with modifying his board lately, I'm lucky that e-tools news got the shot it did.

The only reason I mention it is for future clearity. Any further comment on this would more than likely better belong to the Meta forum and since I made my suggestion and have been heard I will let the issue drop.

Thanks for everone's time.

And as I noted, mine was IMO. There's no reason I can't disagree with your opinion, at least not that I'm aware of, nor any reason I should not reply to something when my opinion differs.

Thanks.
