Who writes the best fights?

Depends what sort of fight you're looking for...

C. S. Forrester does great, great Age Of Sail naval engagements. I profess a profound dislike for the mundane, but Forrester's Hornblower stories really got me hooked.

David Weber can make vectors and electronics exciting. Again, like Forrester, naval engagements are the order of the day, but this time they're in spaaaace. And are cool.

Akira Toriyama seems to have a pretty good grasp of what you do when you're a walking nuclear arsenal, and puts it to use in DragonBallZ. Say what you will about plot, there's very little that compares to the uncensored combat.

Ancient Viking saga writers (saganeers?) had some nice stuff. Fairly dry, but impressive at times. ("Then Kveldulf put his bearded axe halfway through the helmsman's skull and took his ship." Exaggerated simplicity, the fight was somewhat longer than that. But that's the style of it.)

In a more thread-accurate way, I've heard good things about R. A. Salvatore. I'm not certain whether I'm in agreement, but the guy does write a lot of fighting...

I always enjoyed Terry Brooks' fights, especially his first books. Guy Gavriel Kay does them well, too. But then again, I just like their writing anyway. :)

Despite having lost the taste for Salvatores books I do admit he can write fight scences Very Well.

I will have to put my vote up for George R R Martin though.
I think he is Maybe the best fight writer around.
Especially since you never know who is going to be killed or maimed or...worse...

And I also agree that for super powered over the top fight scences that DBZ is the bomb! Well except for always using lower power levels to drag out the battle and then all the big dust clouds that take 2 minutes to clear...
But the fights man!! The fights!! Hardcore violence and some very sweet moves!
Nobody does supers fights like DBZ! :o
But that would go under "best animated fights" so-

I quite enjoy GRRM's fight scenes, but then I enjoy more 'abstract' fighting, in that I don't want every sword slash or spear stab to be described in vivid detail. RAS writes nice, detailed fight scenes, but after a while, I get bored and skip them.

However, there is a fight scene in GRRM's A Storm of Swords that will always be oen of my favorites: The Mountain that Rides vs the Red Viper. Exquisite.

Roger Zelazny has written some incredible fights, as has Steven Brust, who learned from him.

Hands down, no contest, worst fights I've ever read.
I don't know about that... Ed Greenwood might be even wose. He doesn't so much write fights as describe big special effects and gloat about how cool Elminster is. :D
