Why adhere to the "core" classes? Why not deconstruct for flexibility?

I just got home with my copy of the DMG 2. It's full of good information and plenty of ready to use stat-blocks. While I don't have a use for everything in the book (who really does have a use for everything in any book?), there is a lot there that will save me a ton of prep time.

I think I would prefer something akin to the d20 modern system, but using something like the generic classes in UA instead of six based on abilities. One might go back and forth, multiclassing into two or even three of the basic classes. And there would be advanced classes similar to PrCs, but for any class / PrC equivalent beyond the generic three.

I'm not sure how well that would work, but I like the idea.

I'd rather have a classless system. But, hey, I don't, so I take what there is and do lots of tweaking and exchanging as suits my fancy ;)
