Sadly, the earliest Conjurer Subclass abilities are not very supportive of the Summoner theme. I’m pretty sure when Gandalf told Bilbo that he (Gandalf), was “no mere Conjurer of tricks”, Gandalf was referring to the Minor Conjuration ability. Minor Conjuration does not scream Summoner. It screams the old tv show Mcgyver...how can I own this situation by using a particular item, is basically the premise of the show. Likewise Benign Transportation, while cool, evokes the wizard class from the Gauntlet arcade game, not a Summoner. A Shepherd subclass Druid, meanwhile has a summoning class ability at 2nd level, and all of the subclass abilities enhance summoning, not just the high level ones, like in the Conjurer subclass. In terms of being able to summon creatures to do things for you, like a Summoner should: Conjure Animals lets you summon 8 stirges, which could nest in your great cloak........ .......cause a Summoner has got to have a horde of blood thirsty beasts, like Shaft needs theme music. Conjure Woodlands Creatures lets you summon 4 Sprites which is 4 Fly, Polymorph, and other spells, or 8 Boggerts, or 2 Quicklings ( which is 6 extra attacks at 8 points of avg damage for each attack). One can summon 1 Meenlock: with +6 Stealth, 120’ Telepathy and a weak paralyzing attack...a pretty decent scout. You can also summon an automatically friendly Sea Hag and ask for an introduction to her coven. Iggwiliv, could of easily started as a Druid! A 7th level upcast Conjure Fey, allows one to summon a Korred— which can summon an earth type elemental. No Magic Circle and no Planar Binding spells on the Druid spell list is the major problem with the Druid. Just like the Abjurer subclass does not capture the essence of a War Mage theme, so too does the Conjurer subclass miss the mark of detailing the flavor of the Wizard Summoner.
