Why deciding to round down multiclassing spellcaster levels was stupid

Because if you have a class, like Paladin 3, your existing benefits should not get worse because you took a level of some other class.

Why shouldn't they? Particularly with the flavor of the Paladin class, I'd say that may be quite fair for leaving the path of the Paladin for another.

There's been a long precedent of multiclassing inefficiency in D&D. I'm not sure how this is any different than partial BAB not stacking or dead levels of Sneak Attack damage not stacking across classes in 3.x.

If someone asked me why a modern fighter shouldn't be propellor driven since WWII ones were, I'd give them basically the same answer.

Nothing, Ranger 1 doesn't have spellcasting.

We're discussing a game steeped in sacred cows and quirky legacies. Offering a disparate analogy as a way to ignore previous standards doesn't allow much room for an honest conversation in regard to whether or not is was stupid or a mistake.

FWIW, I believe Pathfinder did eventually have official optional rules for stacking fractional BAB. It might be interesting to research whether it had any impact on common or popular builds. Regardless, I would not ever count on something similar coming from WotC respective to multiclass spell slots.
