Why Do Many DMs Overlook This Restriction for Spellcasters?

For those who don't use material components, I ask you this: What if a mage in your game is stripped of his material components (i.e., thrown into jail) - can they still cast their spells completely naked??

Even before I stopped using vancian magic, I had just removed the material components for most spells, so yes. The only spells that still had material components were those that had something very rare and/or expensive.

Now, access to a spellbook is a different story...

Hence, tattooing of spells on the wizards skin got to be common practice.

Material Component Pouches

I use Material Component Pouches, and tell my players that each pouch has 50 uses, like a wand. When it runs low, they buy another one.

In 3rd edition, isn't the new rule that you just have a generic "spell component pouch," which includes all components except for pricey ones over a certain value?

In my view, this is a good thing. D&D's already got enough micromanaging and recordkeeping.

Yup. Exactly. Well said. Succinctly put, even, as they say... :)

Haha- that must have lead to some interesting situations. How do you find a trustworthy tattoo scribe?

Actualy, back when I ran that world, that was a skill most wizards learned themselves. Not every spell was tattooed by a long shot, of course, but the arms, hands, and legs were typicly tattooed with the wizards most essential spells.

I shudder to think where my mage player would tattoo his Enlarge spell.:)
