Why do the books smell bad?

Honestly, unless your book was in a puddle of something when being shipped, you are probably just smelling the ink. I have noticed that my Core Rulebook smells very strongly of ink, but considering the style of the book, where the pages are more or less saturated in ink, it is to be expected.

No burnt rubber for me though, just ink

I'm building a time machine just so I can go back to the 70s and sniff warm dittos again.

Mmmm. Purple ditto ink! B-)
One of my players, while digging through his stuff, ran across a character sheet from my first OD&D game, circa 1976. A mimeographed character sheet.

I still remember turning the crank and the purple lettered, smelly, and slightly blurry sheets rolling out. Memories to be cherished. :)

Whatever it is, being from China I would not sniff too deeply, and definitely do not lick the pages, or lick any ink that rubs off onto your fingers from your fingers. We are talking about a country that has companies that put poison into children medicines and lead into childrens toys. So who knows what "mystery ingredient" they may be putting into their ink.

To paraphrase a certain announcement at Woodstock:

"To get back to the warning that I received. You may take it with however many grains of salt that you wish. That the Pathfinder Books that is circulating around us isn't too good. It is suggested that you stay away from that. Of course it's your own trip. So be my guest, but please be advised that there is a warning on that one, ok?"

At first, I thought it was just I had never owned such a new RPG hardcover before, but now it's been a few weeks, and my books still smell bad. I got them from different places. I would describe the smell as "cedar chest, with subtle notes of nail polish and burnt rubber." It has been noticeably fading, but it makes my eyes water sometimes when I open my Bestiary quickly.

What your smelling is the smell of a quality RPG. If your past buying habits included mostly WoTC stuff, That might be why it is unfamilliar to you. [/humor]

You know somone was going to come up with that one :)

Oh my eyes get a little misty whenever I open my RPG too. ... It's so beautiful....

They also killed our pets with their poisoned "meat" in pet food. Even more tragically, they poisoned their own children too with that same poison (melamine). I will say this though - they made sure the owner of that company met the same fate. Makes me wish Enron, AIG, Blackwater and Exxon were all located there too!
