Why do the designers want it to be "cool" and "fun"

To have "fun" while gaming should be a normal thing.

To make propganda with that terminus is primitive, subculture und infantil. You cant use it if you sell products for full-grown people.

You use it for kids which read comics or play games.

Let me fix this for you.

To make propAganda (spelling is important whilst insulting other's intelligence!) with that terminus is primitive, subculturAL (this needed to be an adjective!) And (spelling again!) infantilE (and again!). You can't (contractions and apostrophes are Best Friends!) use it if you sell products for full-grown people (the editors suggest referring to these as "adults!").

You use it for kids WHO (kids are not objects!) read comics or play games (Fun Fact! D&D is a game!).

I want games to be fun, very much. Although I don't use 'cool' as a synonym for good (I use it to mean like the Fonz), the 4e designers seem to and I certainly want games to be good.

root.tar, I checked your profile and you're three years younger than me. :)

D&D's always been aimed at ages 12+ or thereabouts, which I think would include the 'Nintendo generation'. Polls on ENWorld show most of us started in our tweens or early teens. Get 'em while their young.

I have had fun and thought it was cool researching the archaeological excavations at Nara (outside Kyoto), but I also had fun and thought it was cool to play Mario Party with my wife and friends.

Fun and cool are not mutually exclusive to an intellectually stimulating endeavor. In any case, I am glad they are so excited about their product. However, I am forming my judgment based on the materials I see... not what the brand manager or lead designer thinks. Their opinion is important, but it is not solely what I have to consider.

I don't know where you thought you might be going with this thread, but frankly I don't see it going anywhere valuable and is borderline trolling.

Clunk.
