Value was my number 1 option, but helping to ensure a product exists does come into play for some Kickstarters. I backed the EN World Kickstarter just to give something back to this website.

So there are a variety of reasons, but generally I back because I feel like I'm getting a good deal for my money, especially compared to buying the product after it is released into the general marketplace.

Other!

It can be a mix of a number of things. Great value. Getting it early. Getting a deluxe/unique edition.

For example I backed Werewolf: The Apocalypse 20th Anniversary Edition. Its costing me $145 (physical copy plus international shipping) so its not "great value" (POD costs $65 or $90 excl. shipping) and since I can order a POD now but the kickstarter copy hasn't completed printing so its not "early" - but it is a deluxe copy via traditional printing that won't be available excepting via the kickstarter.

And then there's Dungeon World - gots me a copy earlier than via other channels and some additional content. Fate Core was great value, early and additional content. Tenra Bansho Zero was early. Shadows of Esteren was early too.

But the primary decision before anything else is that I want the game. And so far its never been for altruistic reasons.
