Why do you game?

Heh, this might be a supid idea, but who goes.

Yesterday I had the interesting experience of trying to explain why exactly I play Dungeons and Dragons, brought on by me telling the person that you can't "win" in this game. I tried to explain that RPing is sort of a mix between writing a story and acting at the time, but then they asked why I didn't just write a story.

I then gave up trying to explain, since my brain wasn't working.

So, why exactly do YOU game? Discuss.

I think that there is a form of winning in D&D.

Working as a team to overcome obsticals and dangers to complete a goal is what any game is about.

And as for the DM, your goal is to keep your group together, chalenging and rewarding them enough to keep them comming back.

Win is a term that gets thrown around alot. Ask your inquirer to define win.

If he harps on the DM aspect, explain to him that you enjoy the referee aspect much like many others to with their spare time in little leagues, soccer games, football and the like.

Q. Why do you game?

A. Because it's fun!

Q. No why do you game?

A. Um.. because it's fun?

Q. Specifically though, why do you game?

A. Because... all the hot chicks do it?

Questioner: I see, thanks.

You should take up fencing. It's also more socially acceptable and better for your physique.

Depends. Here in Germany, "fencing" is mostly associated with some fraternities who are still stuck in the 19th century...

Socially acceptable? That depends on whether you consider being ultra-conservative "socially acceptable"...

When I am asked why I role-play I resond because I find it an enjoyable experience which I can share with my friends.

What you seem to be having trouble with is explaining the game, quickly, to others. Here is how I explain the game to others.

The object of the game is to create a rich detailed story that centers around the lives of a group of characters played by the players. It is improvisational, co-operative story writting. The GM is the main writter, the players are also writters by contributing how their characters respond to the GMs scenarios and situations and finally the dice are also writters by determining if and how well attempts at actions are completed.

Hope that helps.

I play RPGs for....

1. Enjoyment

2. Escape

3. Spend time with friends

4. I generally enjoy games, the structure of them allows me to use my mind in ways that are different from my day to day life.
