Why do you prefer CoC 5.x > 6???

Are you KIDDING?

The font type in the chapter headings on the magic and creatures sections are TOTALLY different! And they used different border styles in the text boxes! That's a HUGE change!

And you call yourself a CoC fan. :p
Eric has a point. I really can't tell one edition of CoC from another. They all play virtually identically, and the only question is "which book is slightly better organized than the other book?"

I'm quite excited to see the upcoming adaptation of Trail of Cthulhu, by Ken Hite and from Pelgrane Press, using Robin Laws's GUMSHOE rules. I'm hoping to find a system that carries the feel of the wonderful BRP Cthulhu, but which handles clues and combat better. I have high hopes.

From edition to edition the number of skill points changed, I believe. I would have to ask Darcy, who took over as Keeper after I burned out after 12 months of twice-weekly games using 2e.

I believe the late 5.x series had a lot more skill points per character.

I've never seen 6e myself

Thanks for the tasty link, Grodog. I didn't know Pagan put out their own version of the rules. Curious. I'm sure I'll probably never get to see them, though.

I'll dig to find the specific issues it was, if you're that interested Joshua?

So is Bottle City available for public consumption yet? As soon as I can scrape together two sheckels, I need to get me some of that grodoggone-goodness.

Back from the printer and should be shipping this week, so, now's the time to send Rob you $20 (although if you didn't order Cairn of the Skeleton King or Tower of Blood yet, I think they're both OOP or very close at the moment, too...).

Thanks anyway, Allan. I don't want to trouble you with searching through your labyrintine archives (i imagine your home to resemble Borges' Library of Babel). I'm a little curious about what kind of tweaks Pagan instituted. Could you paint some broad strokes for me (if you remember any)?

Sure, happy to look. While my wife might second your comparison, and I appreciate the Borges strokes, I'm not quite that bad off (or at least I keep telling myself that...).

I'd assume the differences might include a few % points here and there.

Oh yeah, the 6th edition has a ton of wasted space, notably gargantuan margins.

CoC is a very strange game in that it gets a revision every few years, not much changes, people buy it, and no one really seems to complain.

I think it's just about the only game system in history that this is the case for. In the last few editions, very little has actually changed: there are some different scenarios, spells and creatures, and I think they may have changed some of the advice articles on running horror. Nothing of real substance has changed in many years, which is why I tend to think of new editions as really just new printings.

If you have any edition of CoC, you really have all you need to run it.

I wasn't able to find Gumshoe or Trail of Cthulhu at GenCon, alas. Are they both available, or is one/both still pending release?
