The core of the systems is the same (ability checks and attack rolls). The difference is that 4e gives more robust guidelines to both the player and DM which makes a adjudicating actions easier.Both systems though had a very real problem with the lack of non-combat capabilities for the warrior type classes. 5e is a little worse in this regard due to lack of a theme, lack of martial practices, and fewer total feats.</blockquote>
