Why Does spell Reasearch Have Such a High Cost?

Read back over the thread abit. that doesnt confuse me. that was one of part of my reasons for thinking the cost for researching a new spell is to high. Many say because of everything that goes it to researching a spell. I say if a wizard can come up with the knowledge of 2 previously unknown spells with no cost at all, it must not be that big of a deal.
Like I said read back over the thread. I'm not confused..I just realize that the price of spell research was made high to discourage it as part of the designers(mostly good) efforts to make things easy for begining players and DMs(in this case by reducing the chance of the DM having to try and insure the custom spell is balanced.)

Sorry, I was trying to read between the lines. It appears to me that you must be confused, because you are attempting to draw parallels between completely unrelated mechanics.

A 4th-level fighter gains a "previously unknown" Strength point, with no cost at all. Does this mean that permanent attribute increases are not a big deal? Since the rules make it easy to add attribute points in this one particular situation, does that mean it should always be easy to add attribute points?

Ok now I am getting confused...your talking about things other than what I'm talking about. I've already explained my views several times on this thread....and several others have posted the same views more eloquently and with better-worded reasons. So read back over the thread and post your opnion of the topic if you so desire. and then I'll respond to that. Although as I said I've already posted my views as have several others. A balanced spell is a balanced spell...what else really matters? the cost is something that was put in the way it is for a reason that doesnt apply to most gaming groups. Their is no real balance issue involved in reducing or removing the cost for spell research. and sorcerers have no business having to pay at all.
