Why Game?

I mostly just do it to attract women.
That's my second answer to why I play D&D (or when people ask why I'm getting a Ph.D. in English) - It's for the money, the fame, and the groupies.

For me is a fun way to spend some time with my friends, a chance to use my mind & imagination (something the modern world doesn't like you doing), and it ties into my love of mythology and monsters.

Everyone needs a hobby, something that lets them put the stress of the real world behind them for a couple hours.

I bust my hump all week trying to make ends meet.
Gaming is a relaxing, fun, social hobby that lets me recharge my mental batteries.
It's affordable, fits my time constraints, and provides a great opportunity to hang out with my friends.

I was reading some articles from the 30th Anniversary of D&D and a particular statistic got me thinking: the median age of the average gamer is 35. With a career, spouse and kids, no less. So, why game? Life is busy, and complicated. Is gaming just an escape, a distraction from everyday life?

Or is it something deeper, perhaps an attempt to recapture some elusive childhood magic?
A rare creative outlet in an increasingly pragmatic world?
Just plain fun?

Just curious...

It seems to me that you're saying if you have a wife, kids and a career you shouldn't be having fun. What do you think a 35 year ould person with a wife, career and kids should be doing? I'm only 19 and I know that odds are I'll still be playing RPGs in 16 years.

So that you can say to your coworkers that you slew a dragon or took a 12 gauge to a roomful of vampires whereas all they did was watch the [football] game.
