D&D General Why grognards still matter

I do, but what I like is close enough to WotC's that the same general topics of interest keep coming up, only they come up in the context of WotC's game because it rules the roost. On the occasion there's a conversation about a non-D&D style game I like (like Cyberpunk, L5R classic, or many non-narrative supers games), or specifically about a D&D-style game I favor (like Level Up, ACKS, DCC, or the Without Number series) i do participate. But such conversations are far less common that anything using WotC's game as a context.
On these boards, I find it fun to discuss game design theory and what all gaming companies are doing but D&D does seem to be the topic of choice here.

Exactly. I love discussing general gaming topics, but they've most often discussed in the context of WotC's current offering, or at least in that forum. So many threads labeled D&D 5e or D&D 2024 concern questions that apply equally to many other D&D-style games.

It's not like the number, variety, and topic of threads is driven by impersonal natural law! Humans make these threads, and post in them.

Why not create and drive the discussions that you want?

Conversation involves multiple people and here at least there are far more D&D people.

The price you pay for all the benefits of having people to interact with is that you have to interact with people.
I'm not sure I understand your point here.

If you read my post in context, I was explaining why I interact more with D&D people than with people who play others games on this board. My response is there are more D&D people and thus generic discussions involve more of those people. It's why when discussion game design theory I might be on a D&D board even though I don't play D&D because the issues are universal.

Snerk. Nah, it's the center of mass I have questions about.
Fair enough.

I've never actually used the dice in a game; I bought a set for my kid and set for myself as a memento. But the company that made them makes all kinds of similar dice, with different stuff in the middle - dinosaurs, eyeballs, whatever - and maybe it's all novelty stuff. My duck set just sits in its bathtub looking cute.

Some of them apply to gaming in general, which is why you see any serious level of activity from me around here at all.

That getting the benefit of being part of a community requires compromises. If you want to get the good bits out of interacting with people, you must accept some imperfections in those interactions.

Sure. The point being that they all have their own, perfectly valid interests, and you kind of have to accept that going in. Everyone here is exposed to a lot of content they aren't interested in - it is not special to folks who don't like WotC.

Indeed.

Other than specific rules questions, a lot of these discussions are - or can easily become - largely edition-agnostic; and even some specific rules questions e.g. issues with 5.xe's Leo's Hut can be informed by looking at what previous editions did with it.
