Why is it so hard to get people together to play?

I'm fortunate in that we have lots of women in our gaming circles, and therefore if we get them, we are able to get the boyfriend too, or vice versa.

Indeed. Gamer couples are excellent for planning purposes because they show up as a unit; as a rule, if one can make it, so can the other. We've got one in our group and it makes planning for the seven of us considerably easier.

(That said, there is a big difference between a true gamer couple and a couple where one is a gamer and the other shows up to play because s/he wants to be involved in what the first one is doing.)

But the latter can often become the former. At least caring about what your significant other is interested in puts you leaps and bounds in front of many other SO's who think your hobby is stupid and lame. I've seen several GF's and BF's and wives and husbands who've never thrown dice in their lives give it a go and have a good time. And even if my game is "full", ie: I have 5-6 people already, I will always make a spot for a SO should they suddenly decide they enjoy tabletop gaming half-way through a campaign.

Our girls are scary.

One of them, the spouse of our Shadowrun GM, is really freaky about the kind of tactical savvy she employs as an invoker. She doesn't build her own characters, but she most definitely knows how to play them.

The other is a total striker nut (user nai_cha) and she's played rangers, rogues and is now itching to play an executioner assassin. The only thing that stopped her from building one for our level 9 campaign is the clerical burden of building it without a CharBuilder.
