Why keep adventuring?

In the ideal campaign, my character is so tightly tied to the well-being of the world that she would never question her decision to take up her sword and fight. I've never had a character that adventured specifically for fame or fortune... my characters all adventured because their life experiences made them - shaped them into - adventurers.

One character is still adventuring because he regards combat as a "interactive kinetic dance and performance art" ... he's an orc barbarian/bard who sings exclusively punk music. He also likes reincarnation for the variety and the chance to sell the corpse of his previous body as "a time-based sculpture." The epic level party he's with provides the best chance to advance his artistry in these forms.

Plus, he got to punch Llolth, eat the brains of demons, have kinky relations with a drow priestess, AND make out with the daughter of the god of Time. He's a very simple man with simple pleasures.

Another one's still adventuring "because this time, it's personal."

My eponymous character is a demon hunter first and last. He isn't about to settle down until every demon in existence is dead.

I would say for the same reason people like Donald Trump, Bill Gates or Tiger Woods don't retire once they have more money than they're ever likely to spend...ambition...

Bill Gates is retiring next year, actually. Having said that, many athletes have to be practically pushed out of their sport when they get too old :(

PCs usually retire at level 20th ;)

True, but you can't enjoy them if you're dead. Well, actually, if you are friends with a powerful cleric...

OR friends with Orcus and have women that like corpses... ;)

Virgil,

See for me I'd just cheer if said baby was a gnome...

Skeptic,

Unless they're like Elminster or some other guys. ;) That or they want to rule a layer of an outer plane/IE control a demi-plane.

Thurbane,

Nah they don't retire. They just continue to accumlate more and more while we just keep wondering where our next paycheck to cover our D&D needs comes in. ;)

Fortune and Glory (never enough)

Or in the case of my (EVIL) Planescape PC, Power and more Power. He has been building up an undead army for quite some time, and has a keep in the works... soon he shall commence with the conquering of some hapless Prime Material or another. :D
