Why keep adventuring?

Because life is complicated.

You build up enemies and allies. Enemies keep coming after you, and you have to do something. Allies need help, and you have to do something. Life goes on. Who can sit still when they've made their life on the death of others? Things just can't sit still around you, and its always one thing or the other, if only things would just stay right for a little while. Why are those zombies attacking your tower??? People have heard of you, come to you for help, for extortion, try to con you, need you to save the city, the continent, or the world. Old favors are called in, old friends you owe your life come to you for help. You go to them for help. And, when you're settled in again, it all starts over again.

This hits it right on the head.

I don't play a PC whose sole goal in life is to "explore dungeons, kill things, take their stuff".

That happens to be what my PCs do in the course of solving whatever problem comes up. And when that problem is solved, odds are good, a new problem will arise that will need solving. Usually, if I don't go solve the new problem, it will become a real problem for my PC. Therefore, my PCs may try to settle down, but will have to go adventuring again to protect what they've built.

I don't see the need for a game mechanic that ensures the "spot-light" is shared by all equally. It's you and your game friends' playing style the will accomplish or defeat that goal.

Really ? So you would say that "combat power balance" could be droped from D&D ?

Nope. Not what I said.

There are a plethora of character choices in this game. Feel free not to choose feats and skills that will assist your fighter in creating and managing his realm. Go ahead and focus your fighter on combat prowess alone. That is a completely viable way to build your character. The character fights great, but doesn't do much else well; there is nothing wrong with that.

Go ahead and talk to your DM, maybe there is some way he/she could find a way to keep your fighter in the 'spot light' equal to what the other players have. I don't know, maybe a guarranteed big combat fight every couple of sessions sandwiched in between the realm building stuff the others are doing.

Thanks,
Rich
