why no d12 HD's in d20 Modern?

Just wondering if anyone has any insight about the design choice of not having any classes with a d12 HD.

I'm also working on running a Grim Tales campaign but I was thinking of changing the Tough Hero's HD to d12 and the Strong Hero to d10. Thoughts?

You may have missed the Bodyguard, the Advanced Class for Modern. it's a d12.

As for pumping Toughs and Strongs' hit dice up, if you are using only the base classes, it should be fine. If you are using the advanced classes as well, I wouldn't recommend it, without giving the Bodyguard, the soldier, and the martial artist something to compensate.

Oh yeah, good call.

Yeah, I would probably just use the base classes. It seems that Grim Tales took most of the advance class abilities and made them into talent trees.

There's a tough hero talent that gives +1 hp/tough hero level. Making them effectively d10+1; average hps on that is 6.5, the same as a d12. They will lose out on 1 hp at first level, getting 11 hps instead of 12, but that's the only difference.

Interesting. Must check this out.

Yeah, and each base class is 20 levels. That's the main reason I don't want to use the Advanced Classes. I want a simple but customizable character system and Grim Tales delivers.
