Why Not Living Greyhawk?

I just don't understand why self-proclaimed "fans" of Greyhawk would have no love for Living Greyhawk. It produces more lore and material, both new and incorporating all new WotC material into the setting, than the works of Dragon, Dungeon, and possibly WotC for not just Greyhawk, but Forgotten Realms and Eberron COMBINED.

You are doing yourself a disservice by not participating with your local triad's website, visiting local cons / gamedays or even just downloading a few of the thousands of adventures from the RPGA.

It's like saying you're forced to walk the streets naked because you can't find a good loom anywhere these days...

I know several people who are Greyhawk fans who have played LG, including myself and I've seen active people on the Greytalk list involved in LG as well, so castigating Greyhawk fans for not adopting LG seems a bit misinformed.

But LG has its problems, including a lack of any real channel for summarizing everything going on in the campaign for those of us who would like to integrate home games around a timeline and foster a shared experience. LG also suffers from not being able to distribute retired modules so, again, there's no bridging the gap between the Living Greyhawk Gazetteer and the current continuity.

Then there's the question of hassles playing. I understand why things are so tightly controlled for balance purposes, but there's a reason LG is also called Living Accountancy. It's a bit tedious.

The other thing to realize is that LG is fundamentally a GH-based RPGA home campaign that just happens to have a very big home. Not everyone agrees with the way it is developing and has been developed. That's to be expected, of course.

After having been the "lore" guy on our local Triad for a few years, I quickly realized that although the intention is good and fun and all, you do not get a Greyhawk-feel by playing Living Greyhawk scenarios. I've met tons of great people too, but it has nothing to do with "Greyhawk." :)

The content that is produced by most triads is "fine" but the stuff that DM's really need are the tidbits of "evil locations" and whatnot that DM's can run with. Source material on LG websites purposely doesn't include that for player spoiler purposes. It's can't really happen any other way.

The Living Greyhawk Gazetteer was an A+ product in my book, however without any kind of official follow-up source material, it's hard to go with.

Another thought is this: The regional system is in need of a serious makeover and probably a big rotation. We are "stuck" with the County of Urnst. Knwo what that means? We're on Iuz' border, but we can't do any plots with it, because BK is out of our Metaregion...ya, been there, tried that..got shot down.

Being on LG essentially RUINED Greyhawk for me and it wasn't until this year that I came back to it with any interest.

My experiences on the Bissel Triad were a bit different than yours, Emirikol...we actually CHANGED the geography of our region through the story and careful negotiation with other Triads and the Circle. (We got Thornward and its environs back)

This was good, and fun, but your mileage will vary from region to region. Some put far more emphasis on the difficulty of mods and interactives, to the point of silliness.

I've been out of the LG loop for a couple years now, so things always change...

Since LG is not what I'm looking for in my D&D gaming, the mere fact that it is Greyhawk is of little consequence. The campaign rules can be quite arcane, the restrictions frustrating.

Indeed. If they had a different balance paradigm, it might be easier to run with.

None of which I feel I need. I've been quite happy taking the 83 boxed set and expanding it with my own material.

On top of that, my experience with LG, via the RPG, has been less than satisfying.

Oh, and having downloaded a bunch, I found most of the adventures to be sub-par.

Says you. I'm quite capable of deciding whether or not I'm doing a disservice to myself. Besides, I don't need to validate the time I spend on hobbies by talking others into liking the same things I do.

Participate in the websites? You mean play make-believe politics? No thanks.

I concede. You win.............the hyperbole award, that is.
