Why only clerics?

The funny thing is, I didn't know that Thaumaturgist was open only to clerics until recently - it frankly surprised me. In flavor terms, when I think of a summoner of extrapalanar creatures, I DON'T initially think of the cleric... It's just not mentally associated in the general public fantasy zeitgeist.

And today's prize for the most obscure word correctly used in a sentence goes to...Henry!

I, too, think it is a silly PrC. It's poorly constructed, as mentioned.

....But if you look closely, a Good Clr turns out to be the best summoning base class, and Planar Ally turns out to be one of the things 3.5e forgot to fix. (Of special note: Compare CR vs HD of evil outsiders. Now do the same thing for Good outsiders. Chortle merrily.)
