Why pride sucks, or "I should be happy to have a job at all."

Ditto. Thirteen months to the day, including two Christmases. Barely scraped by for that year, but I ended up getting about a 30% raise out of the deal.

Hey, in only 40 months, you'll catch up on missed work!!

Keep the job you have, RW, it shows a good attitude. The fact that you're willing to work, even if it isn't a dream job, may make the difference between you and another candidate at your next job interview. The work you do matters. The are no ignoble jobs. A job has as much, or as little, dignity as you bring to it. Keep a good attitude; it is one of the few things in life over which you have complete control.

I agree with this wholeheartedly

As for good news, I found out at my performance review today I'm getting a promotion. I wasn't expecting it as even a possibility until next year at the earliest. It's been ten years since my last promotion and I will no longer be able to sarcastically boast that I am the lowest paid PE (licensed Professional Engineer) at the 2,500-employee company where I work.

Congrats Dave, maybe you should go somewhere they'll pay you less.

They pay me less here! :)

The only reason I got this promotion was because, due to an org change which emphasized and grew the department I'm now in, they hired someone from another department to do the same job as myself and two other guys. I guess they didn't realize until a year later that he was a grade level above the rest of us, doing the same job (actually, we taught him the job).

My previous promotion, ten years ago, happened much the same way. My buddy took a lateral move to another department and got promoted within a year or two. Then, one of the guys in my department was diagnosed with brain cancer (suddenly lost his sight one day at home). So they asked my buddy to come back and he did. The sick coworker eventually beat the cancer is still doing great today. When he came back, the workload had increased, so they kept my buddy too. Anyway, after a year, they couldn't justify the other three of us doing the same job one grade level below my buddy, so we all got promoted.

:\

I'll take it any way I can get it, I guess.

Just shoot me if you've already done this or thought of this.

Why not work at a book store in the interim? I should think you could get a job at a book store for the same per hour pay you're getting at the grocery store and it would seem to be MUCH more enjoyable. I worked for a Waldenbooks for a few months (many years ago) and it was the best low-paying job I ever had. Got to be around books all the time and got to use the store as a library. Awesome!
