Why should I be interested in Lost?

Without spoilers, could somebody give me a hint as to what is so interesting about Lost? I qualify as a geek (gamer, sci-fi fan, job in IT), and I've had other geek friends say it is cool. It sounds like it is just some folks trapped on an island where weird things happen. Sort of like "Gilligan's Fantasy Island."

So what is the deal?

Um, well, it is kinda similar to Gilligan's Island, I guess. But it's not quite so silly. If you like shows that make you wonder what's going to happen next (ala 24 or Alias), you'll like Lost.

Probably one of the coolest aspects of the show is that, when it begins, we know nothing about these stranded people, but each episode, it cuts out throughout the show to a flashback concerning one of their lives before the plane went down. The interactions bewteen these people as they try to get by on the island makes it engaging as well.

Plus, the secrets of the island are wack. Just when you think there could be a plausable explanation, things just keep getting a little more X-Files.

My short answer?

The characters and their backgrounds are very interesting. That's the cornerstone of any good story. And there is also and interesting mystery surrounding just about everything and everyone on the show (which lends itself to almost weekly cliffhangers or at the least dangling plots). And I would also say the story is very stylish but that's way after the previously mentioned points.

Lost is a character driven show. It is meticulous in the way it crafts the acknowledged main players and those with minor roles. Even if they have a minor role, they advance the story and impact the show in meaningful ways. This isn't to say that the plot isn't important but character development isn't show horned in the favor of plot.

Because the show is entertaining. It's not super great, and it's not overly intelligent, but it's a good mystery and it's worth wasting an hour per week to watch. And, your friends recommended it to you. :)

OK, but is it like Twin Peaks? I find that Lynchy stuff very frustrating, because some of it almost never makes sense. I liked Alias -- but some of the stuff toward the end of season 3 just stretched plausibility even given that the Alias universe is already like spy Spandex.

I can watch totally freaky stuff, and stuff that doesn't make sense until later. I just kind of want most of it to eventually make sense...

Character-driven is good, don't get me wrong.

So, far while I've enjoyed the show the jury is still out on it. THis type of show will live and die by the secrets being revealed. And frankly the super slow pace of giving us anything is frsutrating. Its became predictible since it was obvious nothing was ever going to be figured out.

It is interesting so far but seriously, if you are not that interested I'd just ignore it and avoid spoilers and then catch it on DVD.

It is slow paced. So if you're the type that doesn't need instant gratification, this show will be fun. The creators of the show have in numerous interviews said that the mystery isn't central. They've indicated that "The Beast" probably won't be shown for a while. This show is about twists and turns and even if the twists and turns are revealed as hokey and inept the journey is where the fun is.
