Why should I be interested in Lost?

It appears to be -- though one cannot say with complete certainty -- in the school of "magic realism." If this is a school you dig, I highly recommend it.

This show's pace went from slow to "emmy-for-best-show-imitating-a-snail-riding-a-glacier" and that really hurt my interest in it at the end of Season 1.

The problem is that if nothing happens, they'll lose fans. If something happens, they'll lose fans because some people won't like the answers.

And Twin Peaks made perfect sense :D

I'm not sure what "magic realism" is. Sounds like political intelligence...or quality reality TV.

My temptation at this point is to wait out the 2nd season and see what the buzz sounds like.

Thanks to folks for the input. Given the lack of quality sci-fi/fantasy on TV in general, it is best to give shows the benefit of the doubt for as long as possible.

I wouldn't wait. The first season and especially the early episodes are excellent TV. Period. I think you'll be a little lost without the background of the first season.

"Magic realism" is exactly what it sounds like (to me): an almost-wholly realistic modern-day world with some magic. It's a common name for a very popular genre of fantasy.

The story really is ancilliary to the characters. The characters are the real reason to watch the show, not so much the arc.

As for answers... well, I've read a couple of interviews which say that they goofed a bit and should have answered a little more in the first season. They also said that's something they'd like to address in the second season a bit more. Obviously they can't give away all the secrets, otherwise there's no point to the show.

Hopefully, the first season was like the first act of a play - set up the scenario, the players, and such. Hopefully, the second season will add some twists and turns while addressing the questions from the first season. We'll see though.

Solid characters and good acting make the show for me.

The island is cool, interesting like the X Files, and consistant with its back ground.

I never found the show slow. But then, to me, the mysteries were secondary to the characters, their backstories, and their entwining relationships. X-Files unveiled its mysteries a heck of a lot slower than Lost is, and it was also enjoyable (though it was also much more episodic, too, I suppose).
