Why shuriken?

I don't see why they are "Superior" and I also don't get why they are superior to daggers in the hands of a rogue. What am I missing here?

You might be missing the Ninja. I think you just failed a spot check. ;)

I think it has to do more with "thematics" then anything else. Shuriken and guys that use Shuriken are awesome. Therefor, the stats must be awesome, too.

An alternate way to see it is: To make Shuriken actually useful, you need a lot of training. And if you're Rogue, your training goes even beyond that.

They're superior because they're the only ranged weapon that gets a +3 proficiency attack bonus. If you're a rogue, they also go up in damage die. They're not mind-blowingly good, but they're good.

As I understand it, superior is the new exotic and refers not to the quality or rarity of the weapon but rather the difficulty implicit in learning it. Learning to throw a shuriken in a way that it flies where you want, sticks in with force, and doesn't pose more of a threat to you and your friends, within challenging / combat conditions and the vagaries of the natural environment is not easy.

As for why rogue, I'd guess its a big of ninja in the rogue.

For regular characters, they are superior because they are cheaper than daggers, easier to carry, and go further than other thrown weapons. Also, if I read the rules correctly, you get 5 for the price of 1 when you enchant them.

For rogues, they aren't necessarily superior to daggers. They do more damage, but daggers are more accurate. If you didn't give shuriken a little extra damage when wielded by rogues, the only thing they'd do for a rogue would be to grant an extra 2 spaces of range at the cost of 1 point of attack bonus. Which probably isn't worth it.

I'm kind of puzzled about this. It really seems like rogues are being 'railroaded' into using shuriken. The only reason to go for a short bow or sling would seem to be increased range. All in all, Shuriken are cheaper, weigh less, do more damage per hit in the hands of a rogue, and have better range than a thrown dagger...So why would any rogue ever want to throw a dagger? Is there ANY rogue ranged ability that is precluded when using a shuriken but useful with a dagger?

If not, then it seems like shuriken become the 'duh, why would you handicap yourself by NOT buying them?' ranged weapon for rogues.

What if I don't WANT to be a ninja?
