Why so many in a hurry to leave 3E?

So many people talk like that as soon as the 4E books come out they have to quit playing 3E.

Why is that?

Just inaccurate wording?

Or are people going to have their games end as soon as the PH is out for 4E?

Even scheduling to end it?

If so why not wait until August or September?

Why not play 3E for several months, giving yourself time to learn and understand the new 4E rules? To make sure you understand AoO? To make sure you actually like 4E?

If 3E is as good as so many have said it is, why are you even moving on to 4E? It can't be because you've done everything that can be done in 3E.

So why do so many people seem so eager to throw 3E by the wayside and jump right into 4e?

Probably because one of the best ways to learn how 4e works is to play it. Of course, thus far my group would probably just work a 4e game into our rotation.

Why am I excited to leave 3e for 4e?

Because, when 3e was released, I was twelve years old. 4e will be remembered as my generation's D&D.

I'm not remotely in a hurry to leave. But once the game is out and a little time passes, I expect it will get harder to find people who just want to play straight 3.5. If I had a steady gaming group that didn't change over the years, it wouldn't be a problem 'cause we could play 3.5 forever. But I don't, so I can't.

So I plan to watch & see how 4E develops before making a decision to switch, 'cause once it comes it will probably be easiest to find new groups with the most current version of the rules.

I think memories of the release of 3.0 and the excitement of seeing information trickle out on Eric's 3E News site is helping drive some our excitement with 4e. And for those of who have SWSE, we're excited to see how 4e incorporates some of those changes.

Personally, I expect to be playing 3.5 for some time yet after 4e comes out, but that won't stop me from enjoying the thrill.

We'll probably be in the middle of a campaign at the time, which might or might not be D&D. Our campaigns usually last a 12-18 months. I'll look at 4E and see if it's something I want, but regardless we won't be changing right when it's released like we did for 3E.

Why so eager? Because for all my love of 3E, which I saw as finally bringing D&D closer to a more modern game, I can still see many, many things I want done to it. To me, 3E has always been a speedbump, a way to get the massive fanbase of D&D used to the idea of change (which they had not had to deal with for almost 20 years - 2E was such a small change in toto that all it really did was codify and formalize the house rules most people were using at the time). 4E takes that further, as it must.

The reason I'm so excited is that it brings use closer to the slaughter of even more stupid sacred cows and more towards a modern RPG. It might not be there yet, maybe not until 5E perhaps. But from what I'm seeing, a good step closer. 4E is about 'evolution rather than revolution'. I look for 5E to me more revolution.

My group is on track to complete the WoBS campaign at about the time the 4E errata and PHB2 hit the street.... seems a good time to convert if you ask me :)

I will gladly switch once I have enough solid rules to use, assuming the rules *are* solid...

I can state I am not in a hurry and in fact won't be making a decision until I see the SRD and decide if I like the new edition or not. From the things I am hearing, there are some changes I like and dislike but I have yet to hear anything that has sold me. I will admit I have heard some ideas that I liked so much that they generated ideas for my 3.5 campaigns but not enough to change editions.

There is something I do keep in the back of my mind, the moment I change to 4e pretty much every tool I use today will be useless and I don't know if I am ready for that yet.

Note: I do encourage others to change to 4e as soon as possible and please put your books on ebay, I look forward to enhancing my collection.

Right now, I am not in a hurry to switch.
I was interested in a 4e until I began hearing what is planned and the design philosophy. So far, very little impresses me other than doing away with the "Cookie Tree Syndrome" and removal of exp loss as penalties for both magic item creation and casting certain spells. Among the recent items that I found disappointing were Star Wars SAGA, ToB: B09s, the monster design philosophy, and per encounter resources. I also found the classes and skill system of Iron Heroes from Malhavoc to be a disappointment as well. As these are supposed to be influentiial on the design of 4e, I hold little hope of liking it. However, it is possible that R&D at WOTC might still surprise me, but their track record of producing things I like is very disappointing since Unearthed Arcana.

Right now, I'll stick with my house ruled 3.x which uses UA, several third party products, and tiny bits of certain WOTC products and True20. Possibly switching to the latter completely at some point.
