Familiar. Wild Empathy is dependent on what the DM sends your way, while you can come up with your own uses for a familiar.

-Aside- Why does the ranger get hosed with two DM-dependent abilities, Wild Empathy and Favored Enemy?

Also -- I'm curious if there is a broader point to these polls. Where are you going with them?

In response to your third paragraph: "Going" nowhere in particular, or any more of a destination in mind than many other threads you'll find here. Merely curious. ... I recently purchased the 'Buy the Numbers' product (via this most excellent portal!) and I've perused other supplements in which certain character class design elements seemed to have been weighed against each other. That, and the regular complaints heard about how This or That is so totally useless in actual practice.

The question as posed, however, doesn't require knowledge of personal intent for an honest response from readers here. :) In fact, any additional commentary I might provide could inadvertantly serve to skew the results. Not all details are pertinent all the time.

I voted for Wild Empathy ... I don't think this is utilized as much by many people as it can be. (Of course things are certainly DM dependent as others have pointed out!)
