Wild West or Medieval Europe

The medieval model's trappings are frequently used in DnD, but the society is actually more like an earlier period after the fall of the Roman Empire, where law/civilization is only truly manifest in cities or within a few hours ride of a fort or other millitary outpost. Settlers on the edge of that land risk the threat of the unknown.

Yup, that's a great description of my campaign world. :) Culturally I've consciously modelled a fair chunk of it on Europe ca 500 AD, albeit with 1500 AD technology.

Well, there current homebrew that I'm laying the ground work on is a my take on D20 Fantasy Western. Think of the USA Land/Gold Rush and throw in the feel of low/dangerous magic and fantasy races.

Hm - bit of both, really. :)

I guess I tend to set campaigns within my game world in frontier areas like the medieval Scottish Borders or Prussia that are in many ways more like the Wild West than (say) medieval France.
I'm with S'mon and others. Medieval European frontiers were the best frontiers (with the possible exception of the Bronze Age frontiers).

Gotta go with medieval Muslim frontiers myself.

"This is the best frontier ever! This caravan just showed up from nowhere with very little in the way of guards and tons of stuff on it!"

"No kidding! I love working in Central Asia. Hey, whose horde is that one again?"

Obviously "Wild West" as I've currently got two different campaigns set in the American Southwest in March 1882 but the world also has D&D magic, races and deities.

Feel free to check out these out over in the "Story Hour" forum. I also have a current thread running in this forum fishing for some more plot idea's for tonight's game. (The party is transporting a large stone McGuffin across the desert from Texas to Arizona and magic-using French and Spanish militaries are trying to stop them to steal the item).

I fail to see the antagonism in the original question, either ;). Reports from the medieval frontier after the year 1000 have quite a Wild West feeling to them, and it's a very exciting time period. I've got many elements of the period from around 1000 A.D. in my homebrew :).
