I wonder where you get this spelling from. I know of the slavic leshy (leh-shee) or lesovik, who is a shapechanging woodland spirit with tree-like characteristics (mossy beard and foliage for hair, similar to some depictions of trolls). "Lesidhe" suggests something related to the celtic sidhe but I've never heard of it in celtic lore.

It is a related myth from Ireland, and it is only roughly related to the Leshy, apparently. They are totally androgynous, and look so much like foliage that you cannot tell they are anything but until they start moving around. I've only once seen them depicted as a troll-like critter. They travel in groups, yet don't really interact with one another (rather odd). They mimic sounds (favoring mockingbirds and sometimes human sounds), and use that to cause people to get lost in the woods in a nonviolent manner (unlike the Leshy, who sometimes rapes its victims ...plus, the Leshy is often portrayed as a red-cloaked god of the woods who travels around in a whirlwind, not merely a "species" of spirit like the lesidhe).

Mostly I remember it from Irish lore, and had to look some of it up to refresh the memory.

One here for "woodwose" or "wose."
In Wizards-land, "war" is its own letter:
So a regular "W" race would actually be just fine.

I think we can add "wild" to the list of letters from WotC-land.

Seriously, it's like some sort of incredibly dorky game of corporate bingo.

War
Wild
Shadow
Strike
Dragon
BINGO!

Wizards' affection for idiotic naming conventions makes me want to shank them all in the Achilles tendon. I say this as a lover of language, a writer, and a gamer.

You understand, in the world of words, it's shanked or be shanked (and you can make sangria in the terlet).

The Leshy is often mentioned along with other slavic spirits like the polevik, domovoy or vodyanoy and i've read about leshy wives and children. In most legends, he's nothing like a god.

Interesting. Do you have a link? I googled it but couldn't find a serious source for "lesidhe", only amateurish art sites or new-agey works full of inacuracies and made-up stuff like:

"Limniades (Leem-nee-od-ayes), a word from which we derive our word illuminate, are small blobs of pure light. Like their cousins, the English Will-O'-the-Wisps, they avoid humans." A Witch's Guide to Faery Folk. Copyright 1994 by Edain McCoy. ...right

Tree people remind me of "Dryads."

However, unlike dryads, this race can be men or women.

"Man" + "Dryads" = "Manads".

However, to hearken back to the dryad name, we need to borrow the most recognizable letter, the "Y".

"Manads" + "Y" = "Mynads".

Therefore, I submit the name "Mynads."

Dude, go Greek all the way: "Andryads".

As tempted as I am to name them "warwood," I think i'll be calling them wildren (with the extra r) when a player tries one out next month.

Best joke ever.
