Wilderlands too old?

I would strongly contest, however, the notion that there is no "greater" sense of politics in the Wilderlands. That is true of some maps, but not all. You must read the chapters with the map laying out next to you, so that you can see exactly where each hex entry is as you read it. If you do this with the City State Chapter, you'll see that there is a wealth of political intrigue to be had on that map.
It was the "Player's Guide" that sold me on the setting some time ago. It's actually a very political setting with quite a few intrigues and open or smouldering political conflicts.

When looking at other settings, most of them ahve a Hook if you will.

What would you say are the hooks that Wilderlands has that other settings don't or don't do as well? A Conan feel? Well, we've got the Conan game for that. A wide open expansive area that the GM can customize? Well, the details are so light in some cases, that homebrew may be the answer, or if the person has the old Greyhawk books or even the original boxed set of the Forgotten Realms where everything isn't detailed...
SgtHulka mentioned a few good hooks, but for me, the hook was the campaign hexagon system. I first encountered the Wilderlands around 2002, and immediately fell in love with its way of treating imaginary space. Consider: in most settings, it isn't easy to run a wilderness based campaign, because there is no objective measure of travel. The numbered hexes of the Wilderlands make it a cool overland dungeon with encounters and a lot of room you can fill in. I don't understand why other published settings hadn't incorporated this idea. It works very well in practice, and eases both the DM's and players' jobs. IMHO, the largest failing of the Wilderlands (tied to monetary reasons, unfortunately), is the lack of player maps. I tried to help by posting some of my own (and will do more in the future), but it would have been nice to include at least two or three of them.

For the record:
- I am probably biased, having worked on the product. However, I worked on it because I love it, and not the other way around.
- being 25, my attraction to the world has nothing to do with "nostalgia" or "rose coloured glasses". That's a cheap argument, and I wish people stopped using it.
- The Wilderlands is very accomodating for people like me who prefer words working as a framework to aid them in designing their own adventures. The WL does this quite well - in fact, it is the first non-homebrew setting I had ever used for D&D.

Alright, I think I made up my mind to get this boxed set. One of the things keeping me on the fence was some of the names (picky about that sort of thing,) which of course can be overwritten, and the fact that it did seem like a collection of encounters rather than a proper setting. I will probably get this just so I don't have to design the actual geography of my homebrew (really detest that part of it...)

Has anyone ordered it from Amazon? I seem to recall someone posting that it was backordered indefinitely (might be a different product, perhaps?)

I understood that it couldn't be ordered this way. Something about standard book channels being too likely to have to give refunds because of damaged product. The Necros said the best way would be to order thru your FLGS or directly from White Wolf. Thats what I heard anyway.

Amazon is where I got my copy. No problems in my order but that was a few weeks ago.

i got a copy from Amazon. and another from Paizo. and a thought i was getting one from the source... but i guess my credit card info didn't go through.

my comments about not getting rude weren't directed at the product. they were directed at some of the things Melan says.

not all those buying this product or who had a hand in this product are doing it for nostalgia.

i know i didn't buy it based on nostalgia. i bought it to compare it to what i have already. to see if it has things i can use in my current OD&D campaign.

And the results were? As it's an older product, does it appeal to you in it's breadth, giving you a canvas to paint the depth or ?

haven't finished reading it yet.

so far as i can tell it isn't stand alone completely. the other material really does need to be purchased to get the full use of this product if you plan to use it as a setting unto itself.

i don't so i'm not bothered by that. and i own the older stuff too.
