There have been so many people making so many predictions, statiscially speaking, some of them had to be right.

It seems to me that, "I told you so!" is going to be the among the 5 least constructive things we could see in threads like these.

But also among the 5 most fun.

I think the first real sign of 4E has occurred: No new core rules supplements in the latter half of 2007. (The last is Complete Champion in May). After that, a couple of Eberron supplements that may have a few feats/prestige classes in them, and then the "Rules Compendium"... at a lower price as well (US$26.95)

So, I rather think that 4E will be now announced for release at D&D Experience 2008.

Cheers!

You realize, of course, that WotC doesn't always have their entire catalog for the year online in January. Sometimes it's months down the line before we see what the latter half of the year has in store.

From my blog a couple of weeks back:

"I have talked to some folks who think this might be announced as early as next month at the "D&D Experience" (the re-branded Winter Fantasy) but I really doubt that's the case. There's too much announced product in the queue and any 4E announcement is sure to kill sales on subsequent 3.5 books."

So put me down for a no.

I think your poll is wrong.
Will it be announced at D&D XP, yes. This year? no.

Though I think they'll announce it at XP and release it at GC, since the middle of the year is probably a better time for it.

3.5 Revised might be out in 08, but 4e won't be until 2010 or later IMO.
(Heck, I'd like 3.5R just so I don't have to constantly see the Immediate and Swift actions reprinted every new book since they weren't Core...)

I'd, uh, really like a 4th Edition? ::raises hand::

Seriously -- WotC has come up with whole catagories of new material, figured out how to design monsters that play well, and has just generally figured out the whole 'game design' angle more than at any other stage in D&D's history. My friends and I have already switched over to playing True20 for the time being because we're waiting for WotC to repackage D&D (3.5 revised, 4th edition, don't care) into a form that incorporates a lot of what they've learned in the last five years.

If not, or if they do a lousy job of it, True20 isn't going anywhere -- bring on some new D&D!

I think if we see it, it'll be 2010. I don't think a major edition change every decade is a bad thing, and I don't think D&D is as splintered as other seem to think. No major game has as long an edition cycle as D&D does so far and yet you don't hear people scream about it.

I, too, would LIKE to see a 4th edition. Mind you, though, it would have to so cool that I and everybody else would immediately jump to it. Cool enough to even win over the doubting Thomases. For instance, spell levels going to 20 levels and more integrated metamagic and new spell creation system. If it doesn't have that or something like it or if it doesn't come out soon enough, I may have to seriously homebrew new rules and nobody really wants that.

No, GenCon.

Friends of mine that used to work at WotC are betting that they announce this year and release at GenCon '08. That matches the schedule they were familiar with when they worked there after some messing around due to the 3.5 release. On top of that, friend who usually likes to talk endlessly about what he's working on at WotC is currently telling us "Working on something big, but can't talk about it." The only thing we can figure that he could be working on and not able to talk about it would be 4ED or the like.
