The best I think we can expect is clarification of presentation and minor errata. Which we did have in 3.5, but that was only a small part of it. I would be severely surprised if anything showed up in 3.5 that was churn-inducing, which is the fundamental fact when you invoke the phrase "as much of a change as 3.5 was."

On the Rules Compendium, I agree. I'm expecting this to be a compilation (or compendium :) ) of additional rules material from the various splat books, with errata and updates ... just like the Spell Compendium was. I'm not sure where this "OMG, this is the 3.75" idea is coming from. The Compendium series seems to be an apt name for what I have seen up to this point: spells and magic items. I seriously doubt there will be any need for third party publishers to change anything based on what we see in any of these books. Heck, since none of it will be OGL, you might say that third party publishers can't update based on what's in these books.

So this just seems like another case of the sky falling.

Woohoo! Fantastic news!

Interesting...
""2006 was the biggest year in terms of revenue for D&D than it has been since the 30th anniversary". "D&D is stronger than ever". Several sold out products that were instant reprints. Which is good.

PHB 3.5 hit 128 on the New York Times best Seller list. Just authorized third reprint. "

Cheers!

Just a note on this---I was at the presentation and I think that it was actually Player's Handbook II that was mentioned as being on its third reprint and on the NY Times bestseller list.

As for the show, while the RPGA unfortunately pushed off a big announcement until Gen Con (another Living campaign, I'd guess)--the ability to interact with the WoTC designers throughout the show was a huge plus. Dave Noonan, especially, is an outstanding ambassador for the game. (The worst news of the show was hearing that we'll be getting fewer podcasts from Dave and Mike Mearls since WoTC lost their podcast engineer!)

Between the D&D chats and the enthusiatic gamers I met, the D&D Experience is going down as an annual must for me.

Yes, that's right.

I've found a fuller description of the event. Posting a new thread about it now.

Cheers!

The fact that the contents include material from sources like Sage Advice and elsewhere, especially since "clarification" is often game design code for "unacknowledged revision."

I'm not sure if I'm remembering correctly, but wasn't an important announcement "promised" before D&D Experience?

Exactly - in the end, there was nothing exceptionally new that was told there, at least nothing that was taken as a sensation. :)

That part can be found on the 4e rumors page here at EN World. The relevant quote would be ...

Kevin's exact quote was, according to GR, "...the show currently known as Winter Fantasy will be the primary place to push D&D, and 2007 will reveal a lot"; does this imply that Winter Fantasy will be changing in a major way? A name change seems likely, along with a heavier D&D release/announcement focus. I wouldn't want to speculate further than that, though.

And that was the extent of the promise of an important announcement. "2007 will reveal a lot" is pretty non-committal to me.
