First Post
I heard on Stern a few weeks ago that Beyonce Knowles was lined up for the role of Lois Lane in a new Superman movie, but not confirmed. Today I heard the she was indeed playing that role. Is the any truth to this or what?

Thank God.
Beyonce was good in gold member, but she would be terrible for louis lane.

just like Halle Berry is terrible for catwoman.

well maybe with halle its the costume.
either way.

*mild shudder*

I'm not shuddering at Beyonce. I'm shuddering at having seen 'Louis Lane' twice tonight. Louis is a man's name. Lois is a woman's name. If we had Johnny Depp as Louis Lane, though, I think he could still work as a love interest for Superman.

OK, I can handle a certain amount of rewriting the Superman story, but if Lois becomes "Louis"... :)

Seriously, I also can't see gender or race alterations to its characters being a strong choice for any established property, because it distances the original property from the adaptation. As much as I liked Will Smith, he WASN'T James West... He made a great Captain Steve Hiller, though...

Wesley Snipes made a great reworking of Blade, but if they had cast, say, Jet Li in the role, it wouldn't have worked. Do we see good productions of Shakespeare being done with Mercutio as a woman, for instance, or Prospero as an African mother? Heck, that THING does by Leo Decaprio and Claire Danes still makes me turn my head sideways...

To me, altering established properties just for shock value or attention-grabbing doesn't work...

Yup, I agree completely! Leave them alone! Smallville... Pheh.

I think the Superman comics did experiment with making Lois african american in the 80's but switched back (Clark Kent was going into television for a while there, too).

And by the way, there was a Kenneth Branagh Shakespeare movie that had an african american cast in a major role (can't remember the name, but someone pretty famous), with Keanu Reeves as his evil brother! (I think it was "Much Ado About Nothing"). It seemed to work.

Once people get over the initial shock value, then it becomes no big deal.

I agree on these, too - but Kristin Kreuk and Sam Jones do very good jobs, and Smallville is good, even though it's completely different from the original superman tales. I've completely accepted that it ain't Supes, and just enjoy the tale - same way as with the Wild Wild West movie. That DEFINTELY wasn't James West and Artemus Gordon, but it was a fun movie.
