The whole "Han shooting first" thing brings out the green-rabid-fanboy response in me first, and the movie critic response second.
Han SHOT FIRST, DARN IT!
The thing is, I think the original action (Han shoots first) shows more about Han's character than the altered action. To me, it shows more of a character journey of a man who walks the gray line first, then finds a purpose, than just the simple "self defense" it turns into.
Simply put, if a mobster's got a gun on me, and taking me to "sleep wit' the fishes", I'M SHOOTING FIRST.
