Will there be a "For Dummies" book at launch?

I'd say that a Dummies book would not be especially useful without 4e having been out a while. Otherwise it'd have to been written with playtest info and designer intentions only, and without the benefit of the massive testing that the full player base will provide.

Anyone who bags on the name "for Dummies" has really missed the point, since they're not for dummies; they're for smart, motivated people who simply haven't had the cultural advantages or natural brilliance in a subject that others might.
Did the Webster Dictionary changed the definition of "dummies"?

There should be for two reasons:

marketing - this gets the brand into more bookstores, into more peoples' brains, and probably into more peoples' hands

ease of use for new DMs/players - these books are actually not bad intros to playing and running the game for people new to the hobby. I don't want my PHB to be filled with tons of advice on how to build the best x, but there is a need for that. It can be filled on several fronts - DDI, free stuff, 3rd parties, additional books. While WotC could publish advice books, I'd bet the dummies line has a larger print base, and reaches a much broader audience.

What do you mean? After 30 years, Dungeons & Dragons is not a household word yet?

Isn't that what the D&D Basic Adventure Game boxed set supposed to cover?

How much more broader can they be? I mean D&D can be found in major bookstore chains. Are we trying to get a store shelf space in Starbuck Coffee now?
